Recently I got the following request via CouchSurfing

“Hello!greatings from Greece! i am John and i am an Electrical Engineer, specialised in Energy. I m planning to come and stay to Luxembourg for a couple of time looking for job oportunities. In a few words, i am 29 years old, i have a 2 year job experience

Could you give me any information about the Engineers’ market in Luxembourg? Are there any job oportunities in Luxembourg for Electrical Engineers? Do you know someone maybe looking for an Energy Electrical Engineer?

So I thought why not give him a few tips and publish them here too for other (Electrical) Engineers that want to come to Luxembourg.

Hi John,

I am not up to date how it looks on the job market for Electrical Engineers but I know a lot of companies you could contact.

All in all, if you are talented, motivated and able to communicate well with people, you have a chance.

The major issue you might have in Luxembourg is languages.

We speak: French, German, English, Luxembourgian(yep it’s a language)

If you would speak either French or German (fluently) I would suggest you book your plane ticket now and come over.

If not it is a bit more difficult as you could only work in the big companies as opposed to smaller local ones.

Why you should fly local, or why I hate Ryanair Frankfurt-Hahn

Recently I flew out form Frankfurt-Hahn Airport to Pisa, Italy.

It was a real MESS! Apart that you have to take a 2h Bus to the Airport (or pay parking fees, 40€ for 5 days) the cost of the Bus is 32€ Return. (maybe opt for the parking next time, but don’t forget the cost of the fuel)

Once I got there I had only hand luggage BUT it was 2Kilo overweight (10k allowed, 12k in all) I had my Laptop in my Hand and I was forced to weigh that as well! (Damn these CrappleTops weigh a ton)

Seriously, the f*ck?

I suppose next we will have to Pay more if you’re overweight! (And I have very little understanding for people that are Mc’Donalds fat and constantly watch TV)

So I had to check-in my luggage, bang 40€ (I understand the principle of Ryanair but cmon’ I was carrying it in my Hand)

So when I tried to pass the X-Ray again, guess what, well they were not weighing luggage anymore! I guess once they had enough “victims” they closed for the day.

Let me re-cap:

50€ Actual Return Ticket
40€ Excess Luggage
32€ Bus Ticket
16€ Bus Ticket (Yep from Pisa to Florence)
4hours wasted on Bus
Crammed into small seats (read death traps, luckily the chances to survive a Plane crash are close to nil)

138€ plus the grief and wasted time!

Honestly I prefer to stay local then. Ok it is going to be 3 times the price BUT:

At least I can complain!

And in theory I support the Luxembourgian Local Economy.

As you all know we are building a HackerSpace in .lu and one of my main tasks has been to justify the costs of 42€ per Month (for workers, un-employed and students is a different story)

I think I see parallels here. I shouldn’t be so tight and consume outside of my country if the service exists locally. And if you think that flying is too expensive with the Local companies. Well yeah if everyone evades them to save a couple of bucks that would be expected.

And you can always consider - Budget = Low - so skip next expense to finance the one after that.

Anyway I decided to not fly with RyanAir anymore even if I have no Luggage whatsoever and they give me the Ticket for free with an option to sit next to the pilot. In case someone catches me using them again, p4wn me really hard!

(And I didn’t even get into their you have to pay to use the Toilet approach, isn’t that a Human Right? And their talent to recruit cheap labour open companies in eastern countries and let them work in the West)

A lot has happened since and it needs a revision. I will update once revised.

Dear all,

You might know me but must probably you don’t.

I sometimes have good business ideas that never get realized so let me share with you my latest.

When I visited Silicon Valley I had the opportunity in making a Radio Show about the Valley.

I focused on the startup culture and one of the more fundamental parts of the piece were the Coffee Shops.

Many of the Social media startups had their origin in such a palace of free wifi, free electricity and over priced coffee beverages.

Why not take this insight and build an incubator around… well good coffe.

Better yet let’s expand it and make it profitable.

I still believe that Luxembourg can be the center of innovation all over Europe.

We have one of the highest GDP’s (Sep 2011) and everything just seems right.

So my advice would be to start this thing in Luxembourg (City?)

Why you would ask. We do not have a set of proper Coffee Shops that serve that purpose. We have a very closed startup community that rots in our Incubator(s).

But eventually this will change and needs to change if Luxembourg wants to succeed in the Future. (the Banks won’t be here forever)

We need:

* Physical Place

* Good Coffee

* Some misc. drinks

* Snacks, Lunch and light-Dinner options (hackers have to be fed)

* High-speed internet

* minimal office infrastructure (printers are only nearly dead)

* startup community

We have:

* Over-priced rent in Luxembourg-City

* A government that wants to see new options

* A few venture capitals that take risks

* A lot of Banks that take no risks at all with small ideas

* A brilliant geo-graphic location in Europe

* A university that needs to re-think business

* No cash whatsoever

Concept:

I will not go into details how to run a Coffee Shop business that is pretty obvious and has been done for decades.

Also the main income will be not via the Coffee or Food, but via the startups that use the infrastructure and the service around it.

Services provided:

* Mentoring, Matching and Networking with like minded people

* Business Lunches with the above people. (Mentors eat for free)

* Hassle free Internet

* Consulting on implementing Tech

* IT Support for your portable devices

* others as this project grows

Why will this work:

Business is often done during Lunch. There is NO place in Luxembourg where you can meet the Entrepreneurs of tomorrow. This is a Public place and open for all. The startups do not need to pay rent and only pay for the paper they use. The startups can even get micro kick-offs ($) if needed. The crazier the idea the more interested we are.

What’s the catch:

A minimal percentage in your Future startup will be invested in, your success will be a mutual one!

Initial investment:

6 months of rent

ideally you partner with an existing bar

spare cash to invest small time (50k?)

a network of believers

a web interface that makes this manageable OR just use LinkedIN, Facebook, Twitter and Letslunch.com

That would be pretty much it.

The 6Day Vegetarian - 6Tages Vegetarier

(UPDATE: I have been a bad boy lately and ate more meat than I wanted. But it felt good and I decided now - 2011-11-05 - to eat less meat again)

Recently (Over a year and 2 weeks ago) I decided to become a six-Day Vegetarian.

Should you wonder what a 6Day Vegetarian is, read-on.

Eat vegetarian 6 days per week and only once (for me it’s Fridays) meat, fish or similar. (yep a Fish is an Animal too)

Why? We eat too much meat, cows fart too much and that can’t be good for neither the cows or us.

Thinking before you eat makes you more aware, but careful you can drive yourself crazy if you put everything on the calorie scale (eat healthy and you don’t need to bother about calories that much anyway)

How animals are processed isn’t really organic anymore. Even if you eat Bio-food, if thousands of chicken have to be processed, there aren’t many worthy ways of doing that.
By hand? Yeah right, capitalism doesn’t leave much room for hand-crafts anymore.
The more popular Bio-Foods become the more “conventional” they will be.

So pace yourself. We don’t need to eat meat EVERY day.
For me once a week is meat enough. (and I do a LOT of sports, read: daily, and I still function without pills or other silly, in my opinion, supplements)

Also it got me into cooking again, it’s quite challenging to have:

Broccoli, Soybeans, Peppers, Carrots and other colorful vegetables and think how to cook, fry, steam or whatever them.

Seasoning is key. Let’s face it, if you have ever eaten a soy-sausage or similar you know that the spices are the main driver of taste.

So if you spice it up a notch it will be as tasty as meat.

I don’t like sauces so I don’t have to worry about what to pour that over veggies. (or drown the poor things)

All in all this is a fair compromise for me between environment, health and keeping the balance of all and everything.
